Vanessa Barragão is a Portuguese textile artist who we’ve been following and admiring since the day we found out about her. Born and bred near the sea Vanessa quickly discovered designing and crocheting which she uses as means of expression to develop her own creative language.
The essential ingredients for art and the life of Vanessa Barragão are the unconditional love for the sea, passion for crocheting and a strong family bond. All these factors come together vigorously resulting in extraordinary textile works and each one has its own message: let’s help the run-down sea regain its vital beauty.
Her wall hangings, a real explosion of colours and extraordinary shapes inspired by the coral reef, are often made from textile waste retrieved from factories. This is also a way of protecting and healing the sea: less waste, less pollution, more well-being for our oceans. Crochet is her travelling companion and a proud Portuguese team – mum, grandparents and sister – is the soul of her design studio.
Vanessa Barragão 5 dreamy blends
Vanessa Barragão has created an exclusive extra fine merino tops collection for us from the Sugar Candies collection. 3 blends of extra fine merino wool and 2 blends of 70% extra fine merino wool and 30% silk. All distinctive.
We’ve decided to launch this mini collection, today the 8th June, to honour World Oceans Day which Vanessa Barragão is so fond of. Now, she’s going to tell us about the inspiration behind these blends:
This collection, composed by five mixology process wool, send us to different and very special environments that connect us with our soul. Swim, diving, explore the deep sea and look to the sunset while sitting on a surf board are all very rich experiences that ocean provides to us. These are important moments for self growth as the handmade creation processes are. Each material and each color were selected with the intention of providing these experiences and feelings to the maker, during the work process.
I love the ocean, and all of these experiences inspire me. This collection have other important meaning, the importance of the ocean, the importance of the environment that surrounds us, the importance of keeping our planet healthy. The global warming and all the pollution we produce has to stop, our mentality has to change for better.
Be sure to watch ‘Portrait of Vanessa Barragão: recycling in textile art as a global manifesto’. A short film shot by Agnese Morganti during Vanessa’s residency at DHG where the artist created a piece using our materials.
Have a read of Vanessa Barragão and a really special coral reef too.
